CIS-- College in the Schools offered by the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
CIS courses are UMN catalogue courses offered on high school campuses. Teachers are selected and trained by the university, and attend eleven days of professional training each year. Courses and syllabi are monitored by UMN faculty department heads.
College credit is earned by passing the course with a C (70%) or better.
High school grades are weighted to improve a student's GPA.
A unique feature of the CIS program are the Entry Point Courses. These courses are designed for students in the top 50% of their class and who need some additional language, writing or math support to be successful in college; these are great courses for the student who is unsure if they want to pursue a college education!
The University of Minnesota has very detailed eligibility requirements. Please see the 2012-13 Courses page or the UMN College in the Schools website for more information.
During the 2013-14 school year, NLA teachers are approved to offer:
Physics by Inquiry (Entry Point course) taught by Mr. Good
Writing Studio (Entry Point course) taught by Mrs. Theilen-- approval pending as of 3/15/13
Physics taught by Mr. Good
Psychology taught by Mr. Saunders

AP-- Advanced Placement
AP courses are rigorous, fast-paced, academic courses geared to prepare students for college. Curricula and syllabi are approved by the College Board as adequate to meet AP standards.
Colleges award credit based on a student's spring AP exam score; some colleges accept a score of 3+ (on a 5-point scale), while most require a score of 4+ to award college credit.
AP course grades are weighted to improve a student's GPA.
Students may forego college credit and choose NOT to take the AP test in the spring, however they may still take the course for academic rigor and the weighted grading.
Please see the 2012-13 Courses page or the College Board website for more information.
During the 2013-14 school year, NLA teachers are approved to offer:
AP World History taught by Mr. Stewart
We also hope to offer AP Music Theory; approval from the College Board is pending.
